Vietnam’s VinFast to start shipping first electric vehicles to North America, Europe
Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast will ship about 5,000 vehicles to customers in the US, Canada and Europe in early November, according to a statement from parent company Vingroup, a diversified holding run by the country’s richest person, billionaire Pham Nhat Voung.
Global deliveries will begin a month later, the statement said.
The statement was released after VinFast on September 10 began handing its first batch of 100 all-electric sport utility vehicles (SUV) of the VF8 model, made in the at its factory in the northern port city of Haiphong, to local customers.
Competitive pricing
Prices for the mid-size SUV start at $57,000 for those that include a battery and from $42,200 for those with a monthly battery subscription, the carmaker said on its website.
VinFast’s global chief executive Le Thi Thu Thuy said that the company already registered almost 65,000 reservations globally and expects to sell 750,000 electric vehicles internationally per year by 2026, starting with the VF8 and VF9 all-electric SUVs.
In March, VinFast said it would build a production plant in North Carolina, US with an initial projected capacity of 150,000 electric vehicles per year. It tapped banks in July to raise least $4 billion in funding for the project and has secured about $2 billion in incentives for the plant, which intends to start production in 2024.
Styling gets applause, but not the battery range
Motor journalists have lauded both the VF8 and VF9 models for their “striking styling” by Italian design houses Pininfarina and Torini, the powerful drivetrains and the competitive pricing. On the downside, they criticised the mediocre range of the battery and the minimalistic interior appearance, among other things.
