VinFast delivers first electric vehicle to customers in Vietnam
Vietnamese automaker VinFast has started delivery of its first electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) to customers in its home market as of end-December last year ahead of planned sales in the US and Europe in 2022, the company announced.
The car, the VF e34, is a subcompact model with a narrow and high body and a rounded silhouette designed by Italian car design firm Pininfarina and largely developed in-house by VinFast’s engineering department. It runs on a 110-kilowatt engine with a range of 300 kilometers on a single charge.
The car is priced at 690 million dong ($30,190) and comes with a ten-year warranty and a novel battery subscription service for a monthly fee of $62 and not traveling more than 1,400 kilometers. VinFast also said it would replace the lithium-ion battery pack in the VF e34 if the recharge capacity drops below 70 per cent.
The company, which is part of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, said it had about 25,000 domestic pre-orders for the VF e34 as of 2021. Those customers would get a free battery rental service for the first year of ownership.
Premium SUVs planned for sale in US, Europe
The VF e34, a C-segment SUV in the family of BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga or Volkswagen Tiguan, among others, is the smallest of VinFast’s electric vehicle line-up and is not the electric car the company plans to introduce in foreign markets.
The US and Europe will rather see the larger models VF e35 – a premium D-segment car in the family of the likes of BMW X3, Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Cherokee and, as one of the most important competitors although not a SUV, Tesla Model 3 – and the VF e36, a larger SUV in the upscale E-segment class about the size of, for example, an Audi Q7, Lexus RX or Volkswagen Touareg .
VinFast also provides its own electric vehicle charging network in Vietnam where customers pay to recharge their batteries for the equivalent of $0.11 per kilowatt-hour. The charging costs are billed together with the battery rental.
So far, VinFast has not detailed whether it would offer battery rentals and charging services in Europe or the US when it enters those markets as planned later this year.
