Wanted 1MDB-financed super yacht “welcomed” in Koh Samui
The super yacht Equanimity wanted by US authorities for allegedly having been bought with funds stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Malaysia’s scandal-ridden sovereign wealth fund, has been spotted at a VIP yacht marina on Thailand’s resort island of Koh Samui on June 14, so far the latest officially known location of the vessel.
The Petcherat Marina VIP, a yacht and boat charter and marina operator on the island’s northern coast, welcomed the $250-million vessel as “one of the most luxurious super yachts in the world” and its owner, “the famous Jho Low,” together with two pictures of the yacht and a photo of a smiling Low, in a Facebook post. The pictures, however, are no live images of the vessel.
The message was posted one day before the US Department of Justice announced it will seek to recover $540 million in assets that were allegedly embezzled from 1MDB with the assistance of Jho Low, with the Equanimity being by far the most valuable asset.
The yacht has been traced down only twice before that last month, on time when crossing the Singapore Strait eastbound on June 6 and on June 13 off the coast of Cambodia’s Koh Rong island. some 300 kilometers east of Koh Samui. Since then, the Equanimity hasn’t sent any identification signals.
Reportedly, the Equanimity anchored outside the Koh Samui marina for a few days since it didn’t fit in any berth. Her whereabouts after that are not known.
