Western Union launches Myanmar service

Western Union, the US-based global money transfer service provider, has signed a deal with Myanmar’s Co-operative Bank (CB Bank) to conduct person-to-person money transfers in and out the country.

Using Western Union’s bureau in Singapore for all international transfers, money can now be transferred from Myanmar to foreign countries, and vice versa from international countries to Myanmar, Phey Myint, CB Bank’s Managing Director, was quoted as saying by Myanmar news portal Mizzima.

In September, Western Union signed a contract with Myanmar Oriental Bank to allow remittances through its Myanmar branches, but only payments coming into the country were agreed at that time.

Both Myanmar Oriental Bank and CB Bank have also signed deals with US credit card firms VISA and MasterCard to allow cardholders to make transactions through their respective banks.
