Wireless Smart City project signed for Dubai’s airport freezone

Dafza-Office-BuildingSpanish Wi-Fi hotspot operator Gowex and the Dubai Airport Freezone Authority (DAFZA), a free economic zone in Dubai, have signed a partnership agreement to transform the economic zone into a Wireless Smart City, integrating free WiFi connectivity and smart services in the whole territory.

The authority will work with free WiFi inside its buildings following the deployment of over 500 hotspots. Those will also be installed in urban transport for mobile internet access. Workers and DAFZA’s neighbours will have a free Internet access, with a download speed up to 1Mbps for everybody and payment rates for those who need a faster connection. The network will leverage 802.11ac (GigaBit WiFi) technology.

The project includes three development phases. To be rolled out on May 15, the first phase of the project will allow citizens and machines (M2M) to connect. This project is framed inside Gowex`s worldwide strategy in developing Wireless Smart Cities. In addition, DAFZA will provide infrastructure in the city before the Dubai Expo 2020 event.

DAFZA currently hosts more than 1.600 companies from 5 different continents and has grown 42 per cent between 2012 and 2013.

Gowex is a Madrid-based company that provies smart solutions for WiFi networks in urban centers. It has projects in Asia, the Middle East, Europa and North and South America and offices in Paris, London, Buenos Aires and Shanghai.
